We have an older program that needs to run in a DOS box but in the process
of getting it set up, I think changes were made to the autoexec.nt file that
causes it to do strange things. The desktop is set for 1020x768 and hi color
when first started but after running this program, it reverts to low color.
Don't know why as this occurs only on this machine while other machines run
the same program with no change. I'm not sure how to restore the original
settings.
Thanks

What does the current autoexec.nt file have it it for commands? It is
in the C:\Windows\System32 folder.

There is a copy of the original autoexec.nt file in the
C:\Windows\Repair folder. What you could do is to first rename the
C:\Windows\System32\Autoexec.nt file to autoexec.old then copy the
file from the C:\Windows\Repair folder to C:\Windows\System32 and see
if that resolves your problems.

Good luck

Are the video cards the same in all of the machines? If not,
then this particular video card might not be emulating the
DOS VGA standard of the program. If the card is different from
all the others, then try using a more "typical" DOS (S)VGA setup,
such as 16-bit color and 800 x 600 resolution.

In Ron Martell had this to say:

My reply is at the bottom of your sent message:

Off topic I suppose...

Is autoexec.nt covered by system file check? If so then would "sfc /scannow"
fix it? Just a bit of curiousity... I don't know which files, I had a list
once of SOME of them, are covered by system file checker... Sometime I'll
look deeper but if you know that might get me started. <g>

I am not sure.
