Restarting

I was putting together a video on my family's computer and it was running really slow. In the past, I closed out off all programs and cleaned and defragmented the hard drive. This usually did the trick and I was set to go. This time the computer froze during the disk clean-up, so I had to restart the computer. It started up normally for a few seconds and then asked for me to decide what method I wanted to use for start up (because Windows was shut down improperly.) It gave me the option of "save mode" and "start windows normally". If you didn't choose one it would restart on its own. None of the options worked in getting it to restart. Is there someone that can help me so that I don't have to take it in to a computer repair specialist???

The error message is:

We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last known Goof Congifuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally.

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)

Start Windows Normally

Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.
Seconds until Windows starts: (there is a count down here from 30 seconds and once it gets to zero it stays at zero)

We have a HP Pavilion 552x
