Restarting servers

Hi

Ideally, how often should you shut down and restart your servers? We have 2
W2K servers (1 file/print, the other a Domino server) with 44 XP clients.
Currently, we shut down and restart once a month but I have poolmon running
on the file/print server and it is showing only about 90 MB's available
presently (500 MB's of RAM in that server), one week since last restart.

Is once a month ok or should it be more frequent?

Thanks
Pakia

wouldn't hurt to add more memory
not necessary to reboot that often; unless there are serious updates that
need to be installed
i have a server here that's been up for over 2 months and running well
don't plan to reboot unless i see a need to

I'm in agreement with Seth. I have four Win2k servers (Exch2K, SQL2K etc)
and one Win2K3 server. Neither have been restarted in months. Not sure why
one would need to reboot unless critical updates or preventative maintenance
dictates.

If your running low on ram periodically, then I would suggest that you have
a Service (or App) that is leaking (i.e. not returning) memory from the
Thread Pool to the OS. try NTmon (sysintenals.com), which may help to
identify a bad app.

As a general rule, IMHO, you should only be re-booting a server when
required. Examples would be a Windows Update, a hung service or other
problem, installing new software, etc. The only exception that I would
include would be any Citrix server. Most Citrix admins and experts I know
and have read, will strongly recommend re-booting on a regular basis. I know
of admins who have automated the reboot so that it happens every PM (a bit
excessive, IMHO).

If you have to reboot your file/print server because of low memory, you
either have inadequate memory or a memory leak. Instead of re-booting, you
should be resolving what the problem is...
