Restart/reinstall Network

I don't know what I did to my system but file and printer sharing has
stopped working on one of the three machines in my workgroup. All
three can talk to the Internet just fine. When I try "Network Places"
on the broken machine it get an error "The network is not present or not
started." Searching the Microsoft support site finds a lot containing
this error. But what I really need is the exact numerical error code.
Is that stashed away by Win2kP?

I have a feeling the problem has to do with access/protections that I
might have fat-fingered. Can anyone tell me how to reset those? TIA.

You don't give us a lot to go on. Check Event viewer for errors or try
rebuilding the stack. (note: step two is very important)

Good suggestion! There are some weird, unfamiliar entries..

7002 The Routing and Remote Access service depends on the
NetBIOSGroup group and no member of this group started.

12 Initialization of "NDDENB32" DLL failed (Huh? What's this?)

204 Attempt to determine the number of Lanas failed. (What's a Lana?)

4000 LPD service started successfully. (I am not running LPD!)

If the workgroup connections use TCP/IP similar to Internet, the
protocol stack is fine. I get and send email and news with no problem.

We need the source along with the ID; or better yet when you view the logged
events in Event Viewer (double-click them in the right-hand pane) in the
upper right corner, third button down is a copy to clipboard, then you can
paste in the body of a reply message.

Please do so for each of the different System Log events (that are a Type:
'Error' or 'Warning') since last boot so we can see all of the event detail.

*** MDAC version 2.5 is pretty old. You might consider installing the latest
version of MDAC and JET

It started going wrong when NetDDE couldn't figure out how many
interfaces there are. (Why?). There are 2 but I use only 1 so I'll
disable #2.

As for out of date software (MDAC, JET), etc: I had big problems with
this machine and replaced one of the hard disks with a new one. I
installed Win2KP and SP4 and all the updates from MS Update. If that's
not the right set programs MS has a problem.

Thank you for your help. I'll check out the references you supplied.

"It started going wrong when NetDDE couldn't figure out how many........"

That's more likely an effect rather than the cause.

Windows 2000 was released with MDAC ver. 2.5 AFAIK Windows 2000 SP3 was the
last service pack update to MDAC which took it to MDAC ver. 2.5 SP3 Since
this is for data access it probably is left up to the user and or
administrator to update MDAC and or JET as required.
