Restart loop in XP PRO after Sp1a installation

Hi there,

I have looked long and hard on the MS support site and the nearest article i
can find to my problem is:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;318018

However PC Anywhere is not installed, and my problem occurred after Sp1a
installation.

I have a 1 month old PC with a previously setup HDD (that was on another
PC). We installed the older Maxtor HDD in the new PC and setup the drivers
etc and was working fine for around 4-5days (this was due to software
issues - not having the CDs!).
We then installed Sp1a via Windows Update and then, after installation we
left the PC. After the next system restart the PC simply loops and loops -
It boots up to the WinXP Pro loading screen (you know, with the timer thing)
and then reboots again up to this point, again and again.

Its a nightmare as it wont boot into safe mode, command prompt, last known
good config or anything and i am truly stuck as to how i can roll back SP1a,
which seemed to install fine - clearly i was wrong.

With the events described above i think i would say it was the SP install
that did it, but how can i get this PC up and running again :-(

Any ideas much appreciated.......

A couple of suggestions, do you have a Win98 boot disk? you can try booting
from that and running fdisk /mbr and replacing the master boot record and
see if that works. Another option is changing your ram chip, a faulty one
can sometimes cause that to happen.

Trying booting into safe mode (F8) and then running chkdsk /r and see if
that finds anything.
