I lost my hard drive and have to start over with a brand
new hard drive.
I was running a Windows XP Professional. This was an
upgraded version from Windows 98SE.
1. Do I have to do a complete install of windows 98 first?
2. How do I get my reactivation validated?
3. What pitfalls will I face?
4. The new drive should arrive in a few days as a warranty
replacement.

Greetings

1. You will not have too install Windows 98 first, but have the CD in hand,
the install for XP will ask for the CD to make sure you can use the upgrade.
2. You might have to call Microsoft in order to activate. If you do its a
5 minute phone call, no big deal.
3. You should have any, if you do post your problem in a new post in this
newsgroup
4. Always good to get a new one, remember hard drive do fail, always have a
backup of important data on other media.

1) No. Just install WXP. It will ask you for a qualifying OS. Just
insert your W98 disk.
2) If the only thing that you changed is your HD, it will probably
activate automatically over the internet. At worst you'll need to use
the phone and spend 30 seconds explaining.
3) The "fun" of reinstalling everything.

May the Force be with you.
