I have 2 questions regarding automatic updates.

Two of the settings offer the option of being notified.
It is my understanding that only an Adminstrator will
receive the notification icon in the system tray. Is
this correct?

The third setting will automatically download the updates
and install them on the schedule that I specify. What
happens to open documents if the computer needs to
restart after the updates are installed? This is
assuming I am not at my computer to answer any questions
regarding whether or not to restart.

Thank you for your help.

Keeping Windows up-to-date automatically
Windows can now keep your computer up-to-date automatically with the latest
updates and enhancements. You no longer have to search for critical updates
and information; Windows delivers them directly to your computer. Windows
recognizes when you are online and uses your Internet connection to search
for downloads from the Windows Update Web site. An icon appears in the
notification area each time new updates are available.

You can specify how and when you want Windows to update your computer. For
example, you can set up Windows to automatically download and install
updates on a schedule you specify. Or you can choose to have Windows notify
you whenever it finds updates available for your computer; it will then
download the updates in the background, allowing you to continue working
uninterrupted. After the download is complete, an icon appears in the
notification area with a message that the updates are ready to be installed.
When you click the icon or message, you can install the new updates in a few
simple steps.

If you choose not to install a specific update that has been downloaded,
Windows deletes its files from your computer. If you change your mind later,
you can download it again by opening , clicking the Automatic Updates tab,
and then clicking Declined Updates. If any of the updates you previously
declined still apply to your computer, they will appear the next time
Windows notifies you of available updates.

Notes

a.. To modify Automatic Updates settings, you must be logged on as an
administrator or a member of the Administrators group. If your computer is
connected to a network, network policy settings might also prevent you from
completing this procedure.
b.. Windows might prompt you to restart your computer after certain
components are installed. Please restart your computer when prompted;
otherwise, your computer might not work properly.
c.. You can always install specific updates from the Windows Update Web
site: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com.

Thank you for the response. I had found this same
information on the
web. Unfortunately, it does not answer either of my questions.

It does say that a restart may or may not be required, but
does not say
what happens to open documents when the computer is
restarted. Are they
saved or lost?

It does say that you will be notified, if so desired, yet
my testing
here has shown that you must be logged in as an
Administrator in order
to receive that notification. Is that what you are seeing
as well?

I am running Windows XP Pro.

Kellye, from what I read you do need to be logged on as Admin if you are
going to make any changes to the
Automatic Updates settings and to get a Icon in the Notification Area.
It will not install the updates until you are
ready as administrator to do so. So if the computer has to be restarted
you will have an opportunity to close and save
any open documents or programs that you are working with.

Thanks Rich. I think we have answered one of the
questions. Yes, I think you're right about needing to be
logged in as Admin in order to make changes to the
settings and also to see the update notification.

But are you saying that if I were to choose the "download
automatically and install on my specified schedule" that
the updates will not be installed until an Administrator
is logged in?

Here's an update on this issue.

If you choose the option "download automatically and install on my
specified schedule" the updates will install whether you are an
administrator or not.

I still don't know what happens to an open document if the computer
needs to restart after the download. My guess is that it is lost.
