Hi!

Thanks for answering but, sorry, the "show preview (right)" box is checked.
I never touched it. Despite that, I do NOT get the thumb nail pictures on the
right side of the monitor screen. I am about to go nuts here! Any other
ideas? I ran a LONG antivirus check just in case and nothing comes up.

Hi,

When you click the check box to "Show Search Preview" do you hear a click
sound.

I think I know what is happening...

It appears "Active Scripting" has been turned off for the Internet Zone....

Tools>Internet Options - Security tab, Internet Zone, Custom button, scroll
down the list and find "Active Scripting", choose "Enable".

Also check your Norton settings for any script blocking settings ( I don't
know where to look in Nortons as I haven't used it for a while). You should
get a message from Nortons before Internet Explorer runs a script...
something like "Internet Explorer is attempting to run ....., do you want to
allow this", you should choose to allow Internet Explorer to Allways run
scripts.

Regards.

Hi Again:

I checked what you said.

(1) I do not hear a click sound other than the normal keyboard sound when I
check "Show Search Preview."

(2) I checked "Active Scripting" on the Security tab. It is enabled and I
never changed it.

(3) I looked at Norton's AV settings and I cannot see anything that might
disable scripting. Also, I never get any question from Norton's about
allowing scripts to run.

Is there anything else? Thanks for the help.

Hi,
Last option.

Tools>Internet Options - Security tab, Restricted Sites, Sites button. Is
*.msn.com in the list of restricted sites.

Regards.

Hi!

Just looked. No, the Restricted Sites, sites has nothing listed at all.

Please, don't throw in the towel yet. I am ready to go crazy here. Been up
all hours and don't know what I can do -- I have to do some work from home
for which I need to search the Internet.

I have Windows 2000 Professional installed on my IBM NetVista 8305-29U
computer. This problem started after I installed the latest updates from
Microsoft: KB938127, KB936021, KB936782, KB937143, KB938829, KB921503. I
later uninstalled all of them, after the problem started.

At the same time I installed the August malicious software thing from
Microsoft, which cannot be uninstalled.

What can I do? I am really desperate here!

Hi,
Open a run command and type in:
regsvr32 srchui.dll click [OK]
regsvr32 vbscript.dll click [OK]
regsvr32 jscript.dll click [OK]
Reboot your machine does this help bring back your search companion?.

If it didn't try this:
Open a run command again and type in:
%systemroot%\inf click [OK], it will bring up a window with all the
INFs listed, locate this inf: Srchasst.inf file and right click it then
select install from the list.
If I'm going in a tangent here try to right click on the toolbar (empty
space) and select Customize.. option and see under current toolbar if the
Search if there, if not you can add it from Left window.
HTH.

Hi!

I looked (using the 3rd option on your response) and the search assistant is
there. It is listed. I can actually type in a search and get text results on
the left side of the main window on the computer screen, but the problem is
that I do not see the thumb-nail little pictures that normally display on the
right hand side of the monitor screen along with the web site names that I do
see on the left side.

I am not too computer knowledgeable. I had a similar problem at work and the
technician there removed Internet Explorer and re-installed it. I wouldn't
know how to begin to do that! However, even after the re-install, my office
computer is running so slow that it drives everyone crazy, including me.

Any other ideas? I really need help!

Hello again:

I looked at everything. Nothing is helping. I guess I just have to fork out
the hundreds of dollars to get Microsoft to help. The Norton's folks helped
as much as they could (for free), finally determining that Norton AV did not
cause the problem at all. So I am left with Microsoft.

When a similar problem came up at work, our technician had to reinstall
Internet Explorer, but I do not have the knowledge to do that, nor the
software. My IE came preloaded with my IBM computer. I am still running the
Windows 2000 Pro software.

Anything else you can think of? Thanks for all the great help!

It might help if you gave us the URL that you get in the Address bar for
what you do see (assuming it bears any relation to what you're trying to do.)

My guess is that you are remembering an old implementation of some search
site which has changed. E.g. MSN Search once was implemented with
thumbnails for results in its display area. I have no interest in seeing thumbnails
so I don't even know if I disabled it or whether it just stopped being provided
as an option. Have you checked the Options page of whatever site you are
using?

Robert:

In desperation, I called Microsoft technical support. They have been working
on it for the past two days and I am no better off.

In my work, I must do lots of Internet research and I am handicapped. I use
the preview thumbnails to avoid having to look at all the web sites listed
individually, which is hard for me to do. I am using Live Search on Windows
2000 Pro, SP4, with IE 6, SP!, and have clicked on the preview (right)
selection of Live Search. It just shows a totally blank page on the right
side of the screen now.

If Microsoft comes up with anything, I will write about it. My case has been
escalated to the "senior engineer" there, at this point.

Thanks for the response.
