Is there any way to stop sharing prior to logging on to a
home network in xp pro? I've been through settings and
this site and have found nothing.

Not directly... Easiest way is to keep your computer off until you
are ready to use it... Other options are to set the Server service to
manual (requiring you to enable it manually when you want to serve
files).

Any reason why you want to do this?

I have broadband connection on a home network-all kids have to do is turn the "gateway" pc on to access the internet--problem is the firewall doesn't do much good until I'm in Windows. Major security issue.

I don't understand, why isn't the firewall running at boot time?

To answer that - there is an interim period between network startup
and when the firewall starts that a machine is vulnerable.... I
learned that the hard way at a new clients site when trying to fix
problems... :(

This is supposed to be fixed in SP2 per the released firewall
documentation...

Best way to deal with this is using a hardware router that can limit
access to certain PC's to certain times...
