If you want to avoid the learning curve, you can always
buy a pre-fabricated site that you simply edit with your
content. You should what's on the market out there these
days. Go to www.coolhomepages.com and click on the New
Template Store link.

Mind you, I'm a designer and I see the advent of these
sites as the end of my low-end clientele.

If you are keen on building your own site, I highly
recommend 'The HTML Classroom' by Paul Meyers. This is
the book I cut my teeth on in learning html. You will be
building pages within the first chapter. It is a short
book---I am not kidding---so if you are eager to learn,
this is where to start.

Good luck,
Carmen
