I am using (and ditching) Norton Systemworks as it uses about 15% of my
resources just sitting there.

Does anyone know if the Norton Internet Security or the stand alone NAV are
much better in this regard??

Thanks

What alternative would be more resource considerate yet still very
effective?? McAfee?
McAfee - out of the frying pan into the fire.

Having tried most of the AV software at one time or another, my current
favorite is NOD32 for AV protection. I also use Ad-Aware, Spybot and
Kerio 2.15 Personal Firewall, all free.

I use F-Prot AV on my non critical PCs, those that I don't use for
E-mail or regular web access and I run behind a hardware
router/firewall.

There are a number of other AV products that members of this newsgroup
can recommend including Kaspersky, Avast, AVG and so on. Find one that
meets your needs and try it out.

You will find that most contributors will recommend against suites or
multi-function programs.

Best balance of resources, detection - NOD32

Thanks all. I was leaning towards AVG. The NOD32 website doesn't seem to
have a freeware version (anymore?), just a 30-day evaluation download.

It has a 30-day fully functioning trial version (not a crippled
version with limited features). I suggest you try it out.
