I am working on developing a 32X32 256 color icon. The resource editor seems
to default to black as the background color. How do I change the background
color to a different color? I can't find any documentation.
 
No, I don't think so. When I edit a 16 color icon in the editor, it shows
the background color to be white.
That is what I want for the 256 color icon since that would make the
background invisible after the install. The screens is white.
 
You can set the foreground color, in the palette, based on the color that
you select with the left mouse button, and you can set the background color
based on the color that you select with the right mouse button. However, if
you're going for the transparent look then you might consider using the
transparent color. This is the greenish color in the little monitor looking
icon toward the top left of the palette.
 
Have you tried soft resetting your device? Have you tried creating an icon
using only 16 colors, instead of 256, to see if that helps? If you still
have no luck, post your icon.
 
The exact icon you posted looks as it should through the PPC File Explorer,
Start Menu, and Programs view on my iPAQ 3850 running PPC 2003. What device
(you said iPAQ but what specific model number) and PPC OS version are you
running? I assume that you're setting the icon through the "Application
Icon" property of the Project Properties? Try creating a new smart device
application, assign the icon to the "Application Icon" property for your
project, and see if that makes a difference.
 
I have a 5450 running windows CE version 3.0
I have tried creating a new project with the same results. I still get the
black square with the icon symbol
barely visible.
 
I checked the specs on your device and they say 65,536 colors. So I wouldn't
think it would be a problem there. Do you see the same black square around
the 16x16 icon if, for example, you look at it in the start menu of the
device? Seeing how that exact icon looks fine on my iPAQ, this is a very
strange issue. Are you aware of any issues with that particular model that
may be contributing to this?
 
The 16X16 shows up the same, black square with the actual icon barely
visible. No issues I am aware of. I will check HP's web site and see if they
have anything. The icon looks fine is Visual Studio and the file explorer on
the desktop. It looks screwed up on the emulator and the device.

I will load it onto my wife's pocket pc and see if the problem is the same.
