Resolving Names in Outlook Distribution Lists

When I add recipients to an Outlook distribution list (using vba in Access) I noticed than the contact does not have to be in the existing contacts folder. Further, one does not need to resolve the name for it to be added to the list. HOWEVER - all of the examples I see always do a name resolution before adding a new member to a DL. What is the reason to try and resolve the name? Thanks in advance.
