I found out that the porbolem lies with my browser. In IE the output
looks as expected, but in my default browser, Firefox 0.9.3, I see the
slide navigation and notes frames. Guess the support for other
browsers is just lip service...

I think "other" in this case means "older MSIE and that Netscape thingie".
You're using PPT2000, aren't you? Most of today's "other browsers" weren't
even a dream in the back of somebody's mind when 2000 was written.

For example, there's some browser sniffing code in there, as I recall. Opera
lets you tell it to report itself as one of the better known browsers for just
this reason. Perhaps Firefox has a similar option. That might be all it
takes.
