The problem I was having was installing Critical Updates on a computer
running XP SP2.
Going back farther, the automatic updates were failing every time I tried to
install them. There were 6 updates that I could not install. I finally went
to custom updates and checked the updates one at a time and they all
installed with the exception of KB928090 and IE 7.
I researched the resources in Microsoft as well as Google searches. I found
lots of folks that were having the same problem but none of the suggestions
from Microsoft or the various internet sources would resolve the issue.
Finally I decided to download the KB928090 .enu file and tried installing
from the downloaded file instead of using updates. What was different this
time is that when the install tried to copy the dxtmsft.dll and the
dxtrans.dll I got a stop in the install process and was given the option to
cancel the install or skip the file copy and continue with the install. I
skipped the file copy and continued in both instances. Using this process
the IE 6 update installed with no more problems. Then I did the IE 7 install
and it went in without a hitch. Other updates on IE 7 then went well too.
As I say, none of the fixes I found on the internet resolved the problem.
Hopefully you can use the information to help others.
