What is the best resolution to use for my powerpoint images? I have taken
them in RAW, and saved them as very large jpegs

If you are viewing on screen (not printing) then a full screen image should
be 1028 x 768 pixels (assuming that's the screen res). There is no point in
using higher resolutions.

What about if my images are in vertical format?

Then make them 768 tall by whatever they end up wide. You might want to
place the vertical images on a black slide background so they don't look
awkward.

If the vertical images will be placed on a horizontal slide and projected as
John described, they won't be any more than 768 pixels high, so resample them so
that the long dimension is 768 pixels.
