Computer info- MSI K7T266Pro2a,AMD
X2000+,512gb,Maxtor20gb,Win ME & XP Pro.Drive was
originally partitioned as C:10gbPrimaryw/WinME,D:10gb
Extendedw/XP Pro. Ran fine for over a year.Started to
defrag drives, rcvd msg D:"Not enough room to defrag".
Restarted in C: Win ME and used Partiton Magic 6.0 to
resize C: to 8gb and add 2gb to front end of D: making 12
gb part.Defrag'd C: okay and restarted- operation okay.
Restarted D: XP, sytem froze at 2nd screen.Help says may
have to run SYS.COM to get files back in proper order at
front of partition. Not sure how to do this.I question
this as SYS.COM is dos and XP is not dos based.Considered
defrag'g D: from C:. Would this put files back in proper
order? Other ideas? Help Please. Tnx John

The problem may be the version of PM you used to change the partitions.
Even if the XP OS is on a FAT32 partition there were reports that PM 6 was
not compatable with the OS. I believe PM 7 was the first to be "Made for
XP".

I don't have first hand knowledge but rather have read this early on in this
newsgroup and the WPP NG when XP was first being used by the masses.

FWIW,

I do not know how to help you with your specific
problem. However, I do know this: if you change the
partition sizes on the hard disk that has XP on it, XP
will never boot up agian. It's "FDISK time". I hope you
have not gone too far with this ill-fated partition
resize idea already.

PM7 and BootItNG work fine for shuffling XP partitions around. I use
BING and I recently resized a bunch of NTFS partitions and they all ran
fine afterward.

I don't know what happened to John's partition, nor do I know which
screen is the second screen. Usually there is an error message to work
with. I seem to recall that there are files on NT-like systems that have
to be within the first 2 GB of the partition for the boot files to be
able to find them. This may be what happened when he added 2GB to the
front of D. Or perhaps the NT boot loader was corrupted on C: drive, but
I expect that John is using PM to boot ME and XPpro.

Greetings --

Resizing a system partition often has this result. The Partition
Magic documentation should have contained warnings to this affect, and
should also tell you how to recover.

Both partions are Fat 32. Boot mgr is XP.Boot mgr operates
normally. Xp starts to boot- Black screen, XP logo, Moving
dots, some call it the Splash screen, second screen is
blue bkgrd with Windows XP I believe. At this point the
computer hangs and have to use the reset button to get out
of it. No error msg's. I suspicion when PM moved the files
forward to the front of the partition, some of the files
got out of order or something. May try running defrag of
D: from C: and see if that will put files back where they
belong. Can still access D: from C: so will bkup any files
I want to save before I try anything. Have found a couple
of other things I may try. Thanks for the input. Will post
back with results.

Bruce- I agree, however when Power Quest published PM6.0
XP was still just being talked about, although PM6 is
supposed to work with Win NT and Win 2000. I don't know
anything about those O/S's, so don't now if they are dos
based or not. My grandson has his computer setup the same
as mine and he has resized the XP partition with PM6.0
without problems. I haven't had a chance to talk to him
about this problem he may have the answer. Will postback
when something happens. I am sure there are other people
out there who would like to know what if anything works to
correct the problem.
Thanks, John
