Resize shape in PowerPoint 2007

When I use the handles to resize shapes, the software refuses to "hold"
height changes and pops back to its original size. Handle resizing only
allows me to change the length. This wasn't the case in PowerPoint 2003 and I
can't believe the ony way to resize the height is to enter a different size
increment in the size box of the Format tab. Help?

Check Format Shape -> Text Box. I guess you have Autofit option "Resize
shape to fit text" selected
