Resetting defaults in XP

How do you change default settings in Windows XP? For example, how do I
change the setting to show a list of files as a list with the details -- the
"details" option under "view" -- for the XP as a whole without having to
reset each list in "view"?

Open a folder and change the View setting to Details.
Next, click on Tools in the toolbar at the top of the window.
Select Folder Options from the menu.
Click on the View tab.
In the View page, hit the "Apply to all folders" button.
