I'd like to change the default text editor, the one that opens when I click
on a text file, from Notepad to another program. I'm told it's done in
Windows. How is it done? Thanks,

Gene,

You can right-click a text file and choose Open With, then click the bottom
option of Choose Program. Select the program you want if it's in the list,
otherwise browse your computer for where the application is.

Alternatively, there may be an option in that program to associate itself
with specific file extensions, such as .txt

My question arose from opening .ini files in the alternative file manager,
PowerDesk. I changed the default text file setting there, but it still
chose Notepad instead of NoteTabLight, my preferred text editor. PowerDesk
support says it's a Windows (XP Home) setting issue, not theirs. That I
believe, since the same thing happens in Windows Explorer. Are you saying
I'm stuck doing it manually file by file, or is there some more general way
to set it? Thanks,

Gene

Hi Gene,

Sorry to get back so late.. I would open Windows Explorer and try what I
suggested earlier--PowerDesk may not be modifying the associations and just
defaulting back to notepad for the ini files.

No problem. I misunderstood your suggestion. I just set .txt and .ini files in
Win Explorer Tools menu to open with Power Desk. Now the problem is in Power
Desk: those files are opening another copy of PD! Have to laugh.

A sure sign how tired I am right now. It just struck me that Instead of setting
..txt and .ini files to open with NoteTab Light, I set them to open with Power Desk,
thereby creating an endless loop. Glad I can laugh.
