Will simply removing the battery do that?
If so how long does it take to clear? Instant?

No ... Quite a while, actually.
It *will* clear; but how long is not apparent.
It might do so in a few seconds ... or take as long as an hour or so,
depending on many things. The load, capacitance, and leakage mainly.
If you short the battery clips after removal, *then* it will clear fast.

Depending on the motherboard, you may have to disconnect power from the
mains as well.

No, you need to make sure there's no mains power as well as modern
motherboards don't actually fully turn off.

I meant if it is unplugged also, of course.

You better check with the manufacturer's web site.

Likely won't mention anything, unless there are no reset jumpers and
removing the battery is the official reason.

I haven't seen a motherboard in years that doesn't have a reset jumper,
but I'm assuming it's still omitted on cheaper ones.
