Hi

Is there an easy way to reset a users security to the default mdw file when
they exit the secured database?

I have my shortcut set up so that all users are pointed to the correct mdw
but after they use this they are always pointed to it no matter what database
they open.

The default address is C:\Documents and Settings\(THEIR WINDOWS USER
NAME)\Application Data\Microsoft\Access\Security.mdw

That just simply can't be. Your shortcut points Access to your custom
workgroup file for that instance of Access and only that instance. Also the
default workgroup file is called "system.mdw" so "Security.mdw" must be a
custom one. Something doesn't add up.

Oops, you're right, it is system.mdw

Once someone has used the shortcut (it has the following link "C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\MSACCESS.EXE" "W:\Melbourne\Databases\Station
Forms Ver 1b.mdb" /wrkgrp "W:\Melbourne\Databases\Security.mdw") they are
forever asked for their username and password as it is in the custom
workgroup file, even if they log off and on again to the system.

That is very odd behaviour indeed and in 15 of developing secure systems in
Access I've never come across it. Your shortcut is fine ... I'm at a loss
as to what might be wrong but I suspect it is not Access or anything that
you've done that's causing it. Hopefully someone else might jump in with
the answer and I'd be very interested to find what it is.

Sorry I can't help.

This is interesting, are you sure that "system.mdw" is pristine? Try
renaming it - a new, pristine one will be created when you next start
Access. See if that helps.

Sounds like they are *always* using the shortcut to open Access. They
should only use it to open the secure mdb. You can give them another
shortcut for Access without security.

If this is happening to just one user, then they may have set
security.mdw as their default - change it back using the workgroup
administrator to system.mdw, or they've changed their standard
system.mdw - you can just copy a pristine one from someone else.

Thanks all. I think the problem is fixed. When I developed the db I did so
on C: drive and then copied the mdb and mdw to the shared drive. Looks like
Access was pointing back to the mdw on C: drive. Deleting this seems to have
solved the problem.

Cheers
