I have installed a new modem and router and need to know how often it is
necessary to reset them.

After one week our wireless LAN slowed to a snail's pace and I reset the
modem and router, teh reason for my question.

When you reset the modem and router, did anything improve?

But, like Richard Harper, I haven't reset my router in months, and the
only times I've reset my DSL modem is when I turn all the power off
(e.g., when I'm expecting thunderstorms or going away on vacation).

Some routers have more problems than others. I previously used a
Linksys router and ended up having to reset it several times a week as
we lost all connectivity. Since changing to a Netgear router I haven't
had to reset the router in the couple of months since installing it.

Except for the times when I was going away for some time or when there were
storms around, my Linksys router has needed to be reset
once in two years.

Hi
Routers are actually minicomputers (some are Pentium 486 based) with memory
and OS (firmware).
Some are more stable than the others, some have more memory, some less (less
memory more GIGO problems).
I’m addition it also depends what is the nature of the traffic.
As an example people that tend to stress their Routers with constant heavy
upload download (like p2p) end up with frequent Resets. Router that is
Routing to 10 computers would end up clogged more than one that Routes to
two computers.
If your are “heavy trafficker” and are bothered with the Resets you should
consider mid level Routers, their cost is usually $250 to $400 as oppose to
the End-Users Routers that cost bellow $100.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I have a Linksys WRT54GS coupled with a
SpeedStream 4100 modem. My desktop is connected to the router and router to
the modem. In our LAN are three laptops in addition to the desktop. the
modem has been connected for eight days and the router ten days.

I have been having problems with intermittent internet connections and have
had to call Linksys several times to have help checking the router setup and
each time changing the setup and resetting the modem and router. I feel this
is not heavy usage and not a problem to be dealt with so often.

I appreciate any comments and suggestions.
