I have a machine that has not been on the network for a long while and its
COMPUTER Account in AD is no longer valid (actually the password for the
computer itself).

Can I just reset the account in AD (and thats it) or do I need to pull it
out of the domain and place it into a workgroup, then back to the domain?

Yes, you can reset the account via ADUC. Yes, it requires you an
unjoin/rejoin. (I usually unjoin. Reset the disabled computer account and
then re-enable it. Go to workstation and rejoin the domain.)

I am confused, the "computer account password" is not valid? Or the computer
account is not valid? How is it not valid? Please clarify.

Hello AP,

AFAIK You are also able to use netdom out of the support tools to
rejoin the computer to the domain:

Netdom join ...

Yes, You can - but You have to reset it's account in AD first - netdom
reset ... or simply ADSI script - I use this method in helpdesk scripts
in one of my network

Weired - I've used (a couple years ago) netdom only from the clientside
to recreate the passwords in the domain without taking it out and in or
reset the account. This was on Clients for a Testenvironment which were
imaged. I even put the netdom command in the runonce key.

Afterwards I discovered the DontChangePassword-keys (or whatever they
are called) and never used that path again.
