Hi

I have an 80 GB drive (NTFS) that reads 74 GB's used but the files read as
60 GB's in size. This drive is for storage only (media files). I attempted
to do a defrag when the drive was at 75% full
but it stated that only 1% was available for defragmentation and the other
14% was used for the system. Why is it locking such a large portion of my
drive? How do I free up (unlock) this space for my own use?

I run WinXp SP2.

Thank you

Hi Peterk

Unfortunately I don't know. I am one week new to Winxp and haven't figured
out all the bells and whistles. Could you advise me on how to find out?

Thanks

Peterk

I did a quick search on the internet and located the "System Restore"
feature. The amount of space allocated seems to be the exact amount locked
by the system.

Thank you very much for the help.

Regards

I am glad you found your answer.
XP does have a build in Help&Support
you'll find it by clicking the start menu.
To reduce this amount of space and therefore get less restore points
right click Mycomputer/properies
then click the System Restore tab
