I have to make a resuce disk as part of maintaining an active antivirus
program. Unfortunately I only have the option of saving this file on a
floppy disk but don't have the necessary drive on my computer. Is a rescue
disk that important? I have saved the rescue disk file on the hard drive of
the same computer that has the antivirus program in the hope that this
measaure is better than nothing.
Any comments on this course of action are welcome.

Not a necessity.

Unless you convert the rescue files into bootable media, like a boot floppy, or
CD-ROM, then it's worth nothing.

Rescue disks are an anachronistic remain from the days of DOS. My experience in
both AV and data / disaster recovery is that rescue disks mostly worsen the
problem as they are outdated when you need them, long after you made the rescue.

There exist many good alternatives to rescue disks that you can prepare when
needed, and use last minute malware definitions for AV.

If there is ever a need to start your computer from something else than
your hard disk, you should try some general boot devices, which can be
created with eg the Ultimate Boot CD

http://sourceforge.net/projects/ubcd/

or using Barts PE builder

http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

With these, you can check your machine from a definitely clean startup,
and decide what to do, when something went broken.

Requires a CD burner. For DOS boot floppies, with CD support, check
www.bootdisk.com. A freeDOS boot floppy optimized for AV is available from
www.invircible.com/iv_tools.php

Seconded.
