What do you knowledgeable people recommend as a program to resample mp3 from
360kbps down to 128. I have MP3 Workshop which works great except that it
doesn't keep the ID tags on the new file and that is important to me.
Thanks a lot!

My favorite is CDEX. Just drag your fat MP3's and drop them on CDEX, and
press "Encode". It will then re-sample them. It just happens to be set to
128 KB by default. CDEX uses the Lame encoder, and it sounds great.

CDEX has never messed with my ID3 tags.

I would recommend Winlame (http://winlame.sf.net) . Unfortunately, the
developer hasn't updated it for some time, but still it's a great
software.

The best thing to do would be just re-rip and re-encode at the lower
bitrate.

The mp3 format is a *lossy* format, so an mp3 originally encoded at 360
then downsampled to 128 is going to be of poorer quality than one encoded
directly to 128.

If you don't care, then I guess it's not important.

Regardless, CDex and EAC are two wonderful freeware audio apps. Google
'em.

Do yourself a favor and do NOT re-encode your MP3s to 128. You'll be sorry
later.

Use CDex and re-encode them to VBR with max at 256 and min at 128. You'll
get smaller files retaining most of the fidelity.
