Requirement to eject a CD rather than just press the button

Since I upgraded my PC with a new mobo and 52X CD Writer Windows 98SE
prefers me to eject a CD by doing right-click eject in Explorer. I
used to just press the button on the CD drive and everything seemed
happy. If I just press the button the data stays in Explorer for ages.
Sometimes I can't read another CD till I've rebooted. I'm still using
98SE

As long as I tell Windows (98SE) to eject the CD I don't get any
problems.

By the way, it's similar with the USB RAM drive. As long as I
right-click and eject it, then physically remove it, there isn't a
problem.

Feature of latest BIOS's/mobos?

Try unloading and, re-installing the drivers for the drive.

More a feature of the OS to insure that the cache is flushed
and write operations are complete before the removal media, be
it the CD-R(W), jump drive, etc., is removed. It has been like
this with the introduction of the ZIP drives.
