Not sure why but my browser (IE 6, sp2) now requires me to enter the
"http://" in front of any address I type into the address bar for it to work
properly. I never had to do this before, upon boot up today I have to. If I
just enter a web address "www.microsoft.com", IE just hangs.

Can anyone help by providing a reason why this would happen and how to
change it back to allowing just the web address??

Thank you!

I am experiencing the exact same problem, starting yesterday. Has anyone
replied to you yet?

Nothing yet. It is a bit of a pain, and I really do not want to do a full
system recovery to revert to an early image if I do not have to... let me
know if you find anything out...

Yes, I am experiencing this problem, also. Perhaps there has been some
sort of IE auto update that has "infected" us. This behavior just
started today. There seems to be no IE options that I can change/set
to fix the problem.

Hello, you microsoft geeks out there! Help us to know what's up!!

Thanks!

I am having the same problem, but only on one of my computers. Both are
running XP Pro SP2. The computer with the problem is runnin IE 7 beta and I
think the problem started yesterday. I tried uninstalling IE 7 beta, but that
didn't help.

Just happened to me as well. I'm using IE 6.0 on XP Pro SP2 as well. I've
been hunting around other user groups and haven't found a fix yet.

I just found this post. Trying it now...

Hi,
IE6 on Windows XP? An update released on April 11 has been causing
this problem.

Go to Control Panel> Add or remove programs. Tick the "Show updates" box at
the top. Find Security Update KB908531 near the bottom of the list. Select
it. Click on Remove.

Hope this helps,
Don

Does uninstalling the KB908531 update solve the problem? do you have to
uninstall the other two updates it indicates when you tell it to remove it?
Can you remove it without causing any major problems with any of the other
programs or updates??

Hi,

New information from Stephen Hui of Microsoft...

We've determined that the majority of the issues people are having with
MS06-015 / KB908531 are due to a bad interaction between the security update
and a software component included with various HP hardware devices,
including but not limited to printers, scanners, and cameras.

Here are two fixes which should fix problems caused by the interaction with
the HP software:
------------------------------
Option 1 - Modify the registry

- (If you have multiple user accounts set up) Log onto the computer using an
account with Administrator privileges

- Click the Start button, then click Run and type "regedit" at the prompt,
without the quotes; this will start Registry Editor

- Locate the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell
Extensions\Cached key in Registry Editor

- Right click on the key and select New / DWORD Value

- Rename the resulting value "{A4DF5659-0801-4A60-9607-1C48695EFDA9}
{000214E6-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} 0x401", without the quotes

- Right click the value, select Modify, and type "1" into the Value Data
field

- Close Registry Editor
------------------------------
Option 2 - Kill the HP process

- Wait until Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer, or whichever component is
encountering problems is in an unresponsive state

- Click the Start button, then select Run and type "taskmgr" at the prompt,
without the quotes; this will start Task Manager

- Locate any instances of hpgs2wnd.exe or hpgs2wnf.exe in Task Manager, then
right click on them and select End Process

(Note: Option 2 this may disable some HP device-specific functionality until
you restart your computer.)

If your computer is not currently unresponsive, you should only have to do
Option 1 or Option 2, not both. If your computer is currently unresponsive,
you should be fixed by doing Option 2.

I'm very sorry about the inconvenience this has caused you all; hopefully
this will get things back on track. Please note that MS06-015 fixes a
critical security vulnerability, so it's very important that you reinstall
it as soon as possible if you've uninstalled it. Please also keep in mind
that disabling Auto Update will leave your computer unprotected even after
we release security updates. I understand that this experience has been
very frustrating for many of you, but I really must still strongly recommend
that you leave Auto Update enabled for your own safety.

Last but not least -- if anyone encounters similar problems after attempting
both options above, please post about it here so that we can continue to
investigate.

Hope this helps,
Don

First tried Option 1 and modified the registry and created a new DWORD
Value but didn't seem to fix the problem.

I then tried option 2 and killed the HP process (hpgs2wnf.exe). This
solved the problem but imagine I will need to do the same the next time
I restart the computer.

On another note, we were also having problems with Excel and Word where
the applications became unresponsive when trying to save or save-as
work. Option 2 also seems to have fixed this problem.

Does anyone know when Microsoft will be sending an update to fix this?

Thanks!
Russ

Thanks for recognizing that there is a problem ... and obviously I too
have something similar, but not necessarily identical.

Using XP Pro SP2 with all updates as of right now.

I have a normal working Internet Explorer for one user on the pc but
the "requred to enter http://" with the OTHER user on this same pc.

To the best of my knowledge the relevent Internet Options under Content
and Advanced are identical for both users; as are the relevant Registry
entries.

I have tried Option 1 from Don Varnau .... it made no difference
however.

btw ...from past posts, there were some AutoComplete registry entries
that relate to the http"// subject, but these do not fix the problem
either.

As always any suggestions would be appreciated.

Do you have a link to the article. I can't find it on the MS support site by that number.
