request virus scan

Whenever I open Excel the program insists on requesting a virus scan which
takes a considerable time and is not required. The same applies to any files
I am opening in Excel. Is this something specific to Excel, or is my Norton
protection involved? In any event, how can I disable this?
 
That's in Norton's options.
To turn it off:
Open Norton Antivirus Options
In the "Other" section [Left side] click "Miscelleneous"
Uncheck "Turn office plug-in on"
Click OK

This can be different. If you can't find it there, search for Office plug-in
in norton's help.

Excel files could contain macros which may be malicious and damage your
system; if I were you I'd let Norton run the scan.

Otherwise, maybe NAV has options to exclude certain types of files e.g.
*.xls.

Maybe the norton groups/forums (the support pages on www.symantec.com) would
be better to help, since this isn't really a Windows issue.

Thank you. I will contact them. All my Excel files are self generated so I would not expect them to be malicious.

You can turn it off in Norton AV options, but if you use files created by
someone else or from a source other than your own computer, it is best to
leave it on. Excel files can carry very nasty malicious payloads in the
form of macros and VB scripts that can do significant damage to your
computer when the file sis opened. It is best to have each filed scanned
when opened. Life is short, but not so short that you can;t wait an extra 3
or 4 seconds for the file to scan.

Thanks for the worning, however all files are from my own computer.
