I run XP with SP2. No problems. SP3 came out and I waited on installing
that. I still haven't. Question:

1. Are any bugs out of it by now?

2. Would you give it a "must do" "can do" "doesn't matter", etc. in re:
installing it.

3. Finally, any MS-MVP out there who may be reading this, have you
installed it on your own XP machine?

Thanks.

Chet

1. No
2. Can do
3. No, I have only one XP box the rest are all Vista. I have not gotten
around to it yet.

I have XP Proffessional SP2. Version 2002 build 2600 5.106...... It's an old
machine 850Mhz, 512 RAM. I installed it, before I read the prerequisits,
LUCKILY it installed and I've had ABSOLUTLY NO problems with it. It seemed to
make my Windows Live stuff Run alot faster. It used to take forever to sighn
into MSN Messenger, and Hot mail. When I installed SP3 it signs in quiker.
I'D READ THE PREREQUISITS IF I WERE YOU THOUGH!

Question 1 is null and void by its assumption. Once released to the
public - Service Pack 3 for Windows XP is not going to change. It is and
will remaiin unchanged. If you install SP3 one year from now - you will
download the same Service Pack 3 you would have downloaded today. The
problems people have experienced with SP3 have been correctable in almost
all cases. Usually it is something unique with the users configuration. A
littler preparation on the end-users part (a little pre-reading) usually
prevents any major issues.

As for question 2 - it's loaded. If you are asking just for the "right now"
(May 23, 2008) - it is at a "doesn't matter" stage. As time passes, it will
move to a "if you plan to continue running Windows XP and receive
updates/patches, you will need to get SP3 installed." The reasons are
simple. It hasn't been out officially for an entire month yet. The free
support you can get from Microsoft for issues you might encounter does not
end until the middle of April 2009. Likely until at least then (April 2009)
any updates released for Windows XP will be available to SP2 or SP3 users.

For question 3 - I have installed it on several of my machines - many of my
customers machines and I have no problem installing it on anyones system. I
still - as I still did with SP2 up until the release of SP3 - make a full
backup of any system I am wary of losing the data on before I install
something as major as a service pack. I suggest you being as careful would
be wise.

Key things to note:

Internet Explorer:
"If you have installed Windows Internet Explorer® 7 or a beta version of
Internet Explorer 8, and then install Windows XP SP3, you cannot uninstall
Internet Explorer. To avoid this, ensure Internet Explorer 7 or a beta
version of Internet Explorer 8 is not installed before installing Windows XP
SP3. If you have already encountered this issue, uninstall Windows XP SP3,
uninstall Internet Explorer, and then reinstall Windows XP SP3."

Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002:
"If you install Windows XP SP3 on a computer running Windows XP Media Center
Edition 2002 with SP1, Windows XP Media Center Edition may malfunction. To
avoid this, install Windows XP SP2 before you install Windows XP SP3. If
this issue has already occurred, uninstall Windows XP SP3, install Windows
XP SP2, and then reinstall Windows XP SP3."

It seems some people are unable to get further updates after installing
SP3... Seems some have experienced a symptom similar to doing a repair
installation on Windows XP - and the same fix seems to work for them for
that...

[NB: The above has been updated many times and now includes "a small tool

2. After booting into Safe Mode:

Be careful taking any advice from pcbutts1. He is known to pretend that
software on his site is his own. He lies about being an MVP. Yeah,
just the type of netizen from whom you want to take advice ... not!

It isn't just Leythos that knows of this troll but Leythos seemed
enamored to hunt down pcbutts1's every post, maybe using a script, so he
could condemn pcbutts1 at every opportunity. It got boring to see yet
another Leythos condemnation post. I'm sure, by now, pcbutts1 has his
own very long list of his "trolls" (i.e., those that openly condemn
pcbutts1) on his site which already includes known valued posters, some
of whom are real MVPs. I'm sure that I may now get onto his list.
Ooooh, I'm scared. I don't bother warning about pcbutts1 until I run
across someone who quotes him in their post.

I haven't seen his posts in a long time (he's been killfiled) but now,
in your post that quoted him, I see he is lying about being an MVP. He
started this new lie back on April 20. He is NOT listed at either
https://mvp.support.microsoft.com/communities/mvp.aspx or
http://mvps.org/. Apparently he is yet another non-publicized and
self-nominated MVP. See [a quoted copy of] his post at
http://newsgroups.derkeiler.com/Archive/Alt/alt.comp.anti-virus/2008-04/msg00126.html.
Yep, typical language for pcbutts1. And, of course, he's surely been an
MVP for all those 5 years that he claims but he only chose to announce
such in just the last month, uh huh. He lies so much that he can't keep
track of them all.

You already have SP-2 and every update since then. For SP-3, read the
following articles to determine if anything in SP-3 applies to your
computing environment.

Hi,

I have had nothing but problems with SP3. My programs wouldn't load, my
documents wouldn't load, and it totally, completely trashed NAV2008, as well
as crashing my computer 15-20 times in the past 2 days. I uninstalled it,
then had to totally get rid of Norton as well. Microsoft should be ashamed of
itself issuing this SP as an automatic update. From now on, I will not use
AutoUpdate, and only get security updates as I need them. My advice: use
add/remove programs and get rid of sp3 totally. The fact that MS issues a
bunch of warnings AFTER it's auto-updated on millions of computers is
irresponsible.

Your advice, based on a single system, it not worth shouting about.
You have not identified the specific problem your PC is having.
Until you do, do not advise the world to dump SP3.
I have installed it on 5 computers, without any problems.

NAV2008 was likely the actual problem.

I have installed it onto a large number of machines - likely approaching or
exceeding the thousand mark by now. These machines differ in hardware
configuration as well as software configuration in-as-much as one could
expect - which would be a great deal. As of yet - I have not experienced
but one or two with 'issues' - and those were specific (obviously) to the
machines and I was able to get around those issues quickly and finish the
installation without lasting consequence.

That is not to say there are not known common issues amongst machines -
there are - but it varies per user/hardware configuration/software
configuration/machine history/etc. The list below should allow you to check
your machine for these, clean it up and prepare for SP3.

If you *want* to say that you should not have to prepare for an update -
the fact is that much of what you do to prepare is stuff you probably should
have been doing all along (backups, cleaning the machine of
spyware/adware/malware, defragmentation, chkdsk, updating other
applications and hardware drivers, etc...)

Beyond that - some simple maintenance might be needed - like installing the
latest hardware drivers from your hardware vendors...

You have Norton trash on your computer and complain that SP3 causes
crashes????
Delete Norton and other such trash then update your system.
