Not long ago, someone posted a utility that will pull the links from a group
of documents.
I recently lost my hard drive and would like to rebuild my free software
links list (from this group of course) but honestly haven't the time to go
through the several thousand posts that come up when I reselected my news
groups. I'm thinking going through a long list of links would be way faster
than trying to pick the relative posts from said bundle and avoid the
irrelevant (that long discussion on the pricelessware domain comes to mind).
I know that the item I want to use was in that huge group somewhere...does
anyone know what it is and where to get it?
Pretty please with sugar on top?
Thanks!
You are all awesome!

If JetLinks doesn't work out for you google, ["alt.comp.freeware links" +Carter]

Mark has a script that extracts links from the postings using the above Subject.
You can easily sort by date.

SOUL, the link summariser, works on newsgroups rather than documents.
The code could be adapted to parse text documents, but I guess that
depends on how much you're into programming. Link here:

Go to the downloads section to view the code.

Although for your purposes it's like shutting the door after the horse
has bolted, my program ListApps lists the programs that you have in the
Program Files directory. Link here:
http://www.markcarter.me.uk/computing/freeware/freeware.htm

It allows you to take a list of what applications you have installed. It
saves you having to keep records of what you have installed on your
machine. That way, you could look at the list, and Google around to try
to download the apps again.

The organisers of Pricelessware might like to consider its use as part
of their voting system. Instead of voting, people could just email the
list generated by ListApps, and there could be some kind of script magic
at their end that totted up the scores from the emails. It might make
for interesting statistical reading, too, as people could see exactly
how popular an application was. But anyways, there may be practical
complications involved in this approach, and the organisers might have
other plans anyway. Just an idea.

From the Jetlinks site:

One unpleasant piece of news to break to our users is that while a version
of JetLinks will continue to be available freely, the top version will cost
money. We have not yet decided how much exactly we will charge (you are free
to voice your opinion about this to us).

Yup.

Did you read the date on the announcement? ;)

If you were more specific about what you want on the list someone
might have a better idea. For example are you trying to create a
broad, fairly comprehensive list of original sites? All software
mentioned in ACF? An annotated list? Replace the software (or links)
you previously used based on the assumption that you will recognize
each software and/or site name?

In the meanwhile, here are a few alternatives that quickly come to
mind to rebuild your free software links list. You could:

* Borrow a list created by an ACF regular. Susan and Henq maintain
sites with lists. I suspect a few others have publicly available
bookmarks/favorites.
*** Use the categorized summary of software mentioned that Susan
maintains -- starting with her URL extractors on the Internet page!
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/P_CategoryIndex.php
*** Go through Henk's comprehensive list of sites offering freeware.
Some archive/link sites have a more general list (as in less organized
or less restrictive, not more complete).
http://home.hccnet.nl/hmdejong/

* Search ACF for the Pricelessware nominated (or nominating) lists for
the last few years.

* Use the weekly summaries to obtain your list. Mark Carter started
this a few months ago. Search ACF for
Freeware Links Mark Aug
or check (I think)
sw.url.summaries on urls.sytes.net
*** Apply the script to your own server's ACF. The script may require
slight modification to run iteratively for as long as you have history
or to remove a date check. (This may be the script you were asking
about above.)

* Go through Pricelessware and then several popular large
archives/links list. Henq, among others, has a broad list of links
(including a top 10 archives/link lists). Many of the archive sites
explicitly link to the author's site. Some of the archive sites also
include screenshots for most items.

Good luck,

I don't think that would work too well in this group. The idea is to
vote for your *favorite* in a subcategory - not the 37 Freeware apps
that you have *installed*. ;)

Also - in a discussion a year or so ago newsgroup participants had a
decided preference for a particular method of voting -> posts to ACF,
*not* web site or email voting.

No, but the "Free Download" button suggests shareware rather than freeware.
http://www.dahlhoffit.com/JetLinks/jetlinksv2 (Note the 2 on this URL)

The new shareware version may or may not be coming soon. "Our timeframe
is to deliver the next version of JetLinks by the end of March 2004."

The *current* version is Freeware. It was released 2000-12-04. I use it
and like it.

The Jetlinks download page is here:

JetLinks 1.2 complete installation (2555 KB)
Version 1.2.0.5 of JetLinks.
Includes english and german program languages
