Hi Folks:

I like to think of myself as highly knowledgeable, both
with computers, their operating systems, and the Domain
Name System. This is why it is difficult for me to make
this request for assistance. However, I feel I have
exhausted all options and I am at my wit's end.

For the past several hours today, whenever I reboot my
computer and enter my password at the login screen of
Microsoft Windows XP, a McAfee ActiveShield window pops up
and says something to the effect of, "McAfee ActiveShield
has detected a possible virus on your computer. It is
recommended that you run a full scan of your computer."
So, while reluctant and somewhat puzzled, I did this. (I
hadn't downloaded any unsafe programs, as I don't as a
matter of principle. Just your run-of-the-mill programs
like PuTTY, TextPad, WinZip, and the like.) No viruses
found. I checked to see if my virus definitions were out
of date. Nope, all up to date.

I'm not sure if it's related, but my computer appears to
be acting sluggishly (and it's almost brand new, too). For
instance, it seems to take forever to get the context menu
when I right-click on my desktop. In addition, if I do
CTRL + ALT + DELETE to bring up the active tasks and
processes window, it disappears right away. Does anyone
have any idea why it does this?

(My computer is a Dell Dimension 2400 model PC with an
Intel Celeron 2.2 GHz. processor, 256 MB of RAM, a 40 GB
hard drive, and I have Shaw High-Speed Internet.)

Getting back to the McAfee ActiveShield problem, it pops
up when it says "Loading personalized settings." And,
after I click "OK," the program "loadshell.exe" says it
cannot load because of invalid permissions. Is this a
Windows file or no? If not, it could be the problem.

Any insight (public or private) is welcome and
appreciated. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

All the Best,
Doug

Often, the first thing a virus does is disable the virus scanner from
detecting it. Have you tried any of the online virus scanners?
