The files are *.dbx files. Their location varies, but if you go to Tools |
Options | Maintenance | Store
Folder OE will tell you where they are. They are hidden files in Win2K,
WinXP and Win2K3, so you will have to set Search and Windows Explorer to
show hidden files and folders.

In Outlook Express select Tools, Options and go to the Maintenance tab.
Click Store Folder on that tab and it will show you the current location
of the message store. Before you do this manually, see
http://www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx for information on how to do it and link
to a free program that can help do it for you.

OK - I guess I have to tell you guys my real problem.

I have two machines. One got smacked with a virus (probably a worm)
this AM that caused many problems not the least of which it killed my
antivirus program. A more serious problem is that I cannot connect
any (I said any) .exe program including explorer.exe. I just get an
error window telling me I spelled the program name wrong which I
didn't.
Anyway, I therefore cannot execute Outlook Express. Interestingly, I
can execute MyComputer and look at and search folders & files that
way. However, a search for .dbx and .wab produced nothing. I want
to transport my mailboxes and their content to the second machine so
that I don't lose my emails. I transferred the entire Outlook Express
directory but that did no good.

Makes me wish I never left Eudora!

Am I dead in the water here?

Thanks

That always helps, you'll get some better solutions when you do.

OK, so first we need to get your exe's working properly, agreed? OK, go
to http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and download the EXE Fix
for Windows XP found on line 12. That will download a reg file to your
computer. Once downloaded, right click on the reg file (named exefix.reg)
and select Merge. This will merge the changes to your registry. You
should then be able to run executables.
Anyway, I therefore cannot execute Outlook Express. Interestingly, I
can execute MyComputer and look at and search folders & files that

That's because My Computer is part of the Explorer shell, which is also an
exe but doesn't get launched via file associations in the registry like
when you double click an icon for an exe.
However, a search for .dbx and .wab produced nothing. I want
to transport my mailboxes and their content to the second machine so

As Frank pointed out, these are hidden files so when doing the search make
sure you go to the advanced search options and specify you want to search
for hidden/system files.

Not at all.

When I double click on line 12, I get a window containing the commands
which I presume make up the 'reg' file I want. How do I download
that? It is on the screen okay but what now?

Thanks

Belay that! I downloaded it and executed it and now can execute .exe
files. Now I will continue with your suggestions.

Well - I still find no .dbx or .wab files. And yes I have the 'view'
options set as suggested. My Outlook express on the problem machine
does show all my emails okay, so where are the mailboxes?

Thanks

Again - belay that! I was too quick to jump. I found them! Talk
later.

Well I moved all the dbx files from Outlook Express on machine one
(bad machine) to second machine (W98 machine). Now Outlook express
fails with DLL error. Looks to me as if W98's Outlook Express can't
accept WXP's Outlook Express's mailboxes?

What do you think?

Thanks

Windows version, for this to work, doesn't matter. OE version does.

Maybe so - I downloaded & installed OE v6 on W98 machine, but OE still
fails with msoe.dll failure (I had previously loaded the OE6 mailboxes
form the defunct XP machine.

???

Thanks

Go here:
http://support.microsoft.com
Click "Search Knowledge Base."
Select Outlook Express in product list.
Type in MSOE.DLL and click "Go"
You'll get a lengthy list of OE articles about various conditions that can
cause this error.

Most common causes: the version of OE does not match the version of IE;
corrupted folders.dbx

If you put them in the folder that holds OE's DBX files, move them back out
to an empty Windows folder.

All of the DBX files from the othermachine, including Folders.dbx should be
placed in an empty Windows folder. If transferred via CD you will have to
remove the Read Only attribute. Then use OE's File | Import | Messages.

Before I received your post, I tried installing OE ver 6 on the W98
machine even though it said it was for XP. It installed fine, but I
still could not access the mailboxes I had MOVED into the appropriate
directory. However your mention of the mail file attributes caused me
to remove the read-only attributes which I had not done (copy-paste
had worked to get the files where I wanted them of course). BINGO!
the OE ver 6 on the W98 machine (obsolete that it is) accepted and
displayed and allows me to use all the XP machine's mailboxes/emails.

So - thanks a lot for your help and everyone else too. Now maybe I
can attack the worm problem on my XP machine.

If it's really a worm update your anti-virus and scan the machine.

If it might be spyware or adware, go here:
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each need to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded.

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.

Let me review where I stand. The problem occurred on my main (XP)
machine. In an effort to save off some important files including
emails, I thought I would resurrect an old, obsolete W98 machine that
was in the closet.

This post is from my obsolete machine. Interestingly,
Norton on that machine immediately wanted to do several time-consuming
live updates, suggesting to me that Norton had discovered and remedied
something(s). I have had no problem running on that machine, although
I had difficulty moving files I wanted to it from the XP machine.
Fine now.

The problem with my XP machine was that when I turned it on yesterday
early AM, Norton gave me error messages saying that various Norton
files had been altered, that Norton AV had been rendered disabled, and
that all this indicated that now the machine was wide open to access
by a hacker(s).

Naturally, I immediately killed web access. Then when I tried to deal
with the problem, by reinstalling, uninstalling/reinstalling Norton,
both failed consistently. Uninstall would not complete, nor would
install. And, the error flag-messages persisted.

This AM, I played with the XP machine again, and this time at end of
boot-up, I consistently got 3 error windows from Norton that are
flagged by Norton 1002,1 and 1003,1 and 1005,1.

I tried all the suggestions on the support web site for 1002 1003 &
1005 errors. Nothing helped - including the various registry editing.

You can go to Norton's support-website to see their comments on same
(service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/shared.tech.nsf/docid/.....)
The XP system would then IMMEDIATELY shut down!
I tried it several times with same result. I found that end-task
would prevent shutdown and remove the error windows if I end-tasked
three 'cc' applications. At that point I reinstalled AV but one of
the live updates hung uncompleted (not virus definitions however).
Then I ran a complete virus scan of the XP system - 166k files - no
virus(es) found.

In desperation, I uninstalled NAV - one error windows persisted at
reboot. Error 1002.1 (CCAPP)(NISPROD).
I unchecked all cc-related boxes in msconfig>startup, and reboot no
longer showed the error windows. But that didn't surprise me - after
all I basically caused the CC stuff not to start.

Then I reinstalled NAV 2003 and applied all live updates. That seems
to hang solidly on 'common client' update (I guess cc stands for
common client?) No surprise here since it is cc that is giving me the
error windows at boot-up. Anyway, when I rebooted, the same error
window re-appeared along with a new one:
Error 1003.1 Email Proxy)

The interesting thing though is now NAV says 'autoprotect' and 'email
scanning' are both now activated! In fact I sent myself a test email
to verify that the email was scanned for viruses, and it was! Hmmm.
BTW full system scan works also.

In the meanitime, I have to find a way to get rid of the cc problem
and to successfully do a common client update.
