REQ: Need to buy a monitor

My DELL 18" CRT just went up. So I will be looking for a
replacement.

The first thing I see is the two offerings, CRTs and LCDs. I went to
Staples and was impressed with image clarity etc of the LCDs
especially the 17" NEC 1765. Of course the $519 price tag shook me a
little.

I'm wondering a couple of things.

First, how does this NEC compare (sharpness, clarity, brightness) to
other brands? I saw two Envisions which did not impress me, One Sony
which was better but not as good as the NEC.

Second, I can probably get a 20" plus large-screen CRT for less money.
I wonder if lower sharpness, clarity, brightness will be made up for
by a larger screen on the CRT? Local Staples did not have a 21" CRT.
I also am wondering which is the best in this category, and why?

Anyone wanna throw me an opinion or two?

My advice to anyone buying a monitor today is to get the CRT and wait for
OLED technology to be available...

- CRT is cheaper thatn LCD
- CRT does not have a "native" resolution so looks good at many resolutions
- CRT is still more widely supported by video cards

LCD has it's place, but I still think CRTs are useful.

This specific model used to be the winner in many reviews. I have 1701
model, which is almost the same and it's excellent. Sharpness is truly
limited to it's native resolution, but it can't possibly compare with ANY
CRT. even bigger ones. And consider how your eyes suffer when you look in
CRT for a whole day...
I bought it and i'm not sorry. As for OLED goes, when this technology will
be commonly available, your new LCD will be ready for trash can and then
you'll be able to buy it. You must consider that those OLED's will be (when
they become available) bloddy expensive, as LCD's used to be less than a
year ago. So, don't count to it too much.
I never saw that any LCD is not compatible with any PC or card. Worse it can
happen is that you set it to Plug&play monitor and - ... voila! It works
fine even with Pentium I 100 MHz and even with one 486 DX66...
 
I've got a NEC 1760 had it about 6 months I do mostly text and a
little photo. Its great. replaced a 17 in Phillips. The only
complaint is from the cats who can't sleep on the top of it . If you
want heat, noise an have lots of space by all means go for a CRT.
Its a dead technology and prices reflect it. Problem is if you want
big the price goes up.
Suggest you look before you buy there is a difference. DVI interface
costs you more but few people have need for it since most video cards
are analogue DB output anyways.

Agree with all of it. When i bought my NEC 1701, most of the above values
were among the best (like refresh time is only 16 ms, contrast number is
450, i think etc...)
