Device Manager shows a CD drive I don't have on the machine. I had
tried one yesterday that I found in my closet that I thought I might
use as a second drive to aid copying CDs. Even though the BIOS
recognized it, and the tray is openable and closable (power is on),
W98 fails to be able to read a disk in the drive. So I pitched the
drive. So, I figure that's where Device Manager got its info. So I
'removed' it and re booted. Guess what? It came right back. Did this
twice, so it is no fluke. Anyone have any idea why this is happening?

Thanks

You didn't install any DOS drivers for the CD-ROM you tried, did you? Not
that that should cause this problem.
I would try re-booting into safe mode, then clearing out the extra entries
in the Device Manager from there.
