I'm looking for a music archive program that can not only store info on
mp3's but also regular CD album, CDA files. Most importantly, be able to
store details of 'off line' disks and not just the files on the computer.
closest shareware equivalent would be VisiTrax at http://www.synapsa.com/
though it wouldn't have to have its own integrated music player.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

What about MAC ?

What about MAC ?

Thanks but I've tried it and there's no support for CDA files. I want to be
able to store info on all my music files, mp3's and purchased cd albums,
together in one place.

I don't know if this mediathek will work. I just downloaded it and haven't
had a chance to use it.
It's free for personal use.

Thanks for the reply.

From the web site,
"Mediathek is THE ultimate Personal Information & Inventory Manager : it
helps you keep track & manage virtually anything you own - video and
audio mediums, software, books, collectible items, inventory, and
personal belongings."

It's a little general for my needs plus its crippleware and a hefty 5MB
download to boot. I'll just have to keep looking.

I 'think' dbPowerAmp might do what you want...

it has a very nice database built in, and will play and convert also...

I'm looking for more database rather than a player as I wish to use winamp
if possible. I've tried dbPowerAmp and found it tends to get a little to
friendly with the registry. Don't remember a database with it that can
handle 'off line' mp3 and CDA albums though. I had the impression it was
similar to winamp in that it showed local music files only. Thanks anyway.

Look at NGDiskCat. It will do what you want but I don't recall how *well*
it does it. Free.

Gave it a go. Works in same way as MAC in that it can't rename CD album CDA
files to my own descriptions, it just lists the album tracks as
'Track01.cda' and so on. I didn't try mp3's, no point. Large download,
4.5MB, for so few options. Not a very well designed program, very clunky.
Lots of pop up query and error boxes. Wouldn't shut down properly in XP,
had to shut it down in task manager before uninstaling. MAC is far better.
Thanks anyway.

It does audio CDs now?

Please read my previous post in this thread. I've tried MAC and it can't
rename CD album track descriptions. No point in having a list of tracks
named 'track01.cda, track02.cda'. Wont know whats on them. All the mp3
archive programs will do a reasonable job with mp3's obviously, but I want
my original albums and contents listed and described properly in the same
archive as my mp3's if possible. It's starting to look like it's not
possible unless I buy a program.

Sorry. Here's another idea...

The MP3s are no problem. You could use something like MP3Lister from
http://www.codevisions.de/news/index.html which will let you pick any or all
of many fields to create a CSV list.

For the audio CDs, perhaps any of numerous CDDB enabled ripping programs
could be used to get the disc info (which can be stored in a text file,
either cdplayer.ini or other of your choice). If you could then get that
into a CSV format you could then use a spreadsheet program to store the lot.

Not a very good solution, I grant you. If I can think of a better one I'll
post back.

well, can't answer to the problems with the registry, but it 'will' keep
track of offline stuff...I just added 126 tracks of MP3s of old sea
songs my son gave me on a CD he burned..(It even made a stab at
identifying genré, which I changed by adding one called 'Sea & Chanty').
It may not a database with an interface that is like VisiTrax, but it
seems to me it would work, if you don't find better.
