I have quite a large collecion of photo's now, and to be hones, bout 90% of
them suck.
To be able to shift them more quickly I'd like a viewer that can

Musts:
- view pictures full screen
- able to show in order (as in not random)
- able to go backwards & forewards
- be able to 'mark' pictures when viewing fullscreen:
- I want to be able to select all marked pictures afterwards (to delete
or move them)
- leave the pictures themselves alone (i.e. not marking in the pictures
themself, but in memory (or what ever as long as I can use a 'select marked
pictures' command).

Would like's
- able to browse into subfolders

Many ot the viewers I know can show fullscreen as requested and even do
subdirectories, but I have not found a program that could mark the pictures.

I tried to delete pictures while viewing them full screen. But it leaves to
much room for errors (deleting the ones I would like to keep).

Not exactly what you want, but close:

If you first empty the Recycle Bin, and use it as a buffer for deleted
pictures,
IrfanView can what you specified but 'mark' the pictures.

But perhaps this is ok:

Use 'Arrow left' or 'Arrow Right' to go back and forward.
Use the 'F7' '1' to '10' to move picture to one of 10 specified folders
Use the 'Delete' button to delete,
Use the RecycleBin to recover a wrong deleted picture.

Thanks for your effort. I guess it is a way of doing it, but not for me. If
I'd use the wastebasked, I'd bound to press shift-delete, or otherwise
delete the can without realising I just deleted pictures. Well, I'd realise
it, but then it would be too late.

I'm a great opposer (full automatic 'Shift-del' deleter) of using your
wastebasked as a buffer of any sorts. If there was an Anti-wastbasked
foundation, I'd be the chairman, without doubt. Not even a Pinguin
(unix/linux) freak can be as anti-wastebasked. I Even had this wierdness
back in 19984 when I got my first Macintosh.

That is why I ask for a mark program.

I've seen people stuff there most valuable documents in there (because it is
such a convinient place to stuff things in, while keeping it apart from the
other documents in the 'MyDocuments' folder). And then trying to blame
others for dleteing these documents because they emptied the trashcan.
Peronally, I call it a case natural selection.

If you find a good un-delete program you can un-delete files even when
they are deleted from the trashcan, giving you a second (or is it a
third) chance.
That could make this method more attractive to you.

For me Thorkilds methods sounds very good and I will use it.

use irfanview as suggested, but hit 'I' (information) and then choose 'comment',
adding 'delete' to the file

then use the OS and search for jpegs containing the text 'delete'

maybe this'll work?

karl

(be sure to run the search first in case some smart-ass has already added the
text to keepers ;-)

I like this idea better already.
As for smart-asses: that wouldn't be the case.

Those 5000+ pictures are all created with my digital camera, so the only one
who has been able to mess arround with the pictures is yours truly (ok, so
it is a smart-ass, but at least I know what he did ;-) )

Also thanks for the effort. I had the same thought you had for a moment, but
I had to discard it:

One of the 'problems' I encounter is the fact that there are over 5000
photo's to be judged. Since other work on the computer goes on as well, It
wil take a couple of days to compleet the judgement. In between a lot of
stuff will be trashed/deleted. It is one of the reasons I won't use the
trash.

An unelete program means I may not delete or save anything in the meantime,
to avoid the risk of the pictures being overwritten.

But I'm glad that someone finds Tharkilds methods usefull (meaning this the
nicest way possible, though it may not read so...)

MK,

Try "Firegraphic" and "Cam2PC". Both are excellent photo viewers for those
with large collections of graphics or a digital camera. They may not have
all the features you need, but may be closer than anything else.

Firegraphic in particular has amazing talents for previewing the contents of
multiple folders, and popping up multiple images for comparison.

Both have rudimentary editing, or can open your pictures in PhotoFiltre.

That is why I ask for a mark program.

That may be as scarce as chicken's teeth. :)

My method is to use a backup program that automatically backs up my pics to
another HDD early in the AM. I can edit all I want, and if I accidentally
ruin or delete a pic, I just go get it from backup.

Another good method is to copy all candidates for editing to an "Edit"
folder. Once finished, they can be copied over the originals in their
original folder.

Good luck!

Oh... That second last word is my cue :-)

I'll try Firegraphic.

Your suggestions of backing up stuff: I already did on CD, but browsing to
5000+ pictures to find the-one-you're-stupid-enough-to-delete is quite time
wasting when walking along CD's (My harddisk is nearly full, The pix
themselfs covering 4+ GB. My notebook only has 40 GB. Maybe I should invest
in a larger one, I know)

My aim was to find a program that could quickly select the pictures (in full
screen mode) I need and then be able to check them again to be sure I have
only the ones I want to keep on my harddisk. Since I'm quite trigger happy
when it comes to deleting, I wanter something 'mightykitten'-proof, if you
know what I mean

Thanks again for your suggestion.

You could use the above method but without using the delete function,
instead use one of the 10 preset folders as your own trashcan folder,
and delete those pictures later, when you are sure that there are no
mistakes.

Ok... I think I did not express myself clearly enough. The method you
propose is the method I seek. Infact I'm doing it right now. TBut the thing
is. I want the program to move the picture to one of the folders (save or
delete) with a single keypress while im viewing the picture fullscreen. I
was requesting for a way to mark them because I thought that there were
image viewers who had this feature.

The reason? As stupid as it might sound, judging your own photo's on quality
is quite a hard thing to do, since you have 'emotions' atached to each photo
you make.

What I try to do, is to view a picture for a couple of seconds, while
considering whether this picture is good or worthless. But onfortunatly,
them being your own pictures, ther is a huge gray area where you will find
it hard to decide weather you should keep them or not.

Switching between views (full screne to thumnail mode) will effect the
judgement of pictures, even if it sounds as lazy as 'well I keep this
picture, because else I have to switch back to thumbnail mode and move it to
an other directory as the previous ones. Especially after a few hundred
pictures, this is still a wrong, but almost unavoidable way of shifting
them.

I hope I made some more sence about my request,

Two suggestions:

1) In Irfanview, moving a picture to another folder is two keystrokes,
F7, followed by 1, 2, or some other digit. If you want to make that 1
keystroke, you could use a macro program to record "F7" followed by
"1" and tie it to, for example, F9. PowerPro can do this (I have done
it), and I assume other programs such as Autoit could be used, as
well.

2) Take a look at pixort, http://www.jotto.no/pixort/about.html. It is
a tool specifically designed for reviewing and sorting photos. You see
the images almost full screen, you also can see the exif information
and a small histogram. You can show two photos at a time, so that you
can compare A vs. B to see which you keep. It loads images very
quickly. You can do single keystroke moves of the images to other
folders. You can mark the photos with bookmarks 1 through something (I
forget how many bookmarks), and then do operations on bookmarked
images. Nice little app.

Wow! pixort. Yes that is *the* program I was looking for. Even better as I
hoped for.
All most fullscreen,
sorting pictures in (up to) 5 directories with simple keypressings,
showing exif tags,
and even a nice histogram view if wanted.

I owe you one for this find....

well....and I was just gonna suggest 'renaming' the bad pics with
something like ZZ at the front to move them all to the bottom of the
list, then deleting all at once after you're sure.....but who can pass
up a NEW program..*grin*
