REQ: Image Exposure utility

I normally use ACDsee for auto Re-expose my photo's because
1) It presevers the EXIF data
2) It is the best damn exposure funtion I've yet encountered.

To be compleetle legal, I deleted my trail copy of ACDSee and installed
version 3.1 (from a magazine CD) only to discover that this particular
function was not yet implemented in that version.

Now I would like if there is some freeware that can rival with ACDSee's
exposure function, or will I have to stop paying rent for a mont or so (well
it is not That expensive, but still...)

Please don't let me down with this,

One of the best Freeware programs PERIOD I have come across for massaging
digital photos, particularly poorly exposed ones is DCEnhancer. The Freeware
version works brilliantly with most cases in default mode but you have the
option of tweaking various parameters.

I have to say, it is quite good in it enhancing. Very nice indeed.
Unfortunately it deletes the Exif info and only does one picture at the
time.

To baad that the shareware version (that overcomes this problem) cost about
as much as ACDSee, so there isn't an improvement.

Will keep it in mind though, as it is a kind of workable solution. Now for a
proggy that extracts and imports Exif data... ;-)

Exifer. http://www.friedemann-schmidt.com/software/exifer/. Will
extract exif data to a text file and then restore it later. Also can
edit exif data. Can work on batches. I use it, and recommend it.

There are others, as well, including a command line program if you're
into batch files. Search google groups in ACF and rec.photo.digital.

Didn't ACDSee used to be free at one time (or was there a program with
a similiar name function for Windows 3.x) ?

IIRC it was, until version 2.9x I believe.

3.1 is relased as special promotion for magazines (the Dutch PC format of
last month had it on the cover CD)

But that version (and therefor suposedly earlier) versions don't have the
exposure enhance fucntion :-(
(And as for browsing: XNView does a good job in the same direction.)
