I have a CDRW drive that contains an audio CD disk. The drive works
fine and is connected to power and IDE.

The drive is not connected to the on-board sound 'header' on the MOBO.
I used to have to do that to get sound from the CD drive to my
speakers. Now the speakers get sound just fine - I wonder how?

Thanks

There is another way in new operating system and new hardware. It's
digital way and that you may hear sound from your audio without conecting
to sound card(or integrated on MOBO).

The operating system CDFS (filesystem driver) had digital audio
extraction added to it, so essentially it's reading the audio off as a
file instead of being converted to analog inside the CDROM (drive)
then of course transferring that file on the IDE cable.

you have the "Digital CD Playback" feature enabled located in your
device manager->your cd rom properties->properties tab->Digital CD
Playback

Later versions of WMP(Windows Media Player) added by default the
digital option to take audio sound out from the IDE cable. The version
shipped with WinXP has this by default.Earlier versions of Windows can
be updated to this feature but installing later versions of WMP.
However this also means that the Wave volume controls the Audio
output and I prefer separate control so change back to the Analogue
option.
