Sally

Hi,

Would someone be kind enough to post a VIRGIN export of the Microsoft IE6.0 registry keys AFTER an installation of SP2?

MalWare recently took hold of my PC and although AdAware has successfullly cleaned it - my autosearch settings are totally messed up.

Any assistance would get my gratitude. Must be post Service Pack 2 install.

Run REGEDIT

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Internet Explorer

Right click on the folder and EXPORT

Mail to me (or post here) Justice(at sign)GameBox.net

Thanks in advance.

Hi Sally,

Wouldn't that be an over-kill? If the problem is only with the Search
preferences, you can reset them to the defaults using this fix:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/RestoreSearch2.REG

If that does not help, pls post the actual problem you're experiencing.

Problem is that I cannot search from the address bar.
Doesn't matter if I prefix the search with a question mark or not.

The page that comes up has the title "Invalid syntax error" and gives the
usual "Page cannot be found" error.

I have tried the reg fix and it doesn't work - neither do the assists I've
located on half a dozen sites.
Is there a way to repair this?

I've tried

rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall
132%windir%\inf\ie.inf

and Tweak 29 from http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Which I think is essentially the same thing.

I've also tried scanning for corrupted original installation files (I forget
the command line)

So at my wits end on how to fix this problem.

Sally,

Are you able to use any other internet based programs, say Yahoo! Messenger?
To test if it is a Winsock issue or not.

Assuming you're unable to browse using IE. If not, (but the problem is only
with the Address bar search), try this as well.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks
In the right-pane, there must be a REG_SZ named
{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}

-and-

Type REGSVR32 /i SHDOCVW.DLL

I use Trillian, mIRC, OE6.0, etc

All work fine.

I've also notices that all the entries in the "Advance" section of "Internet
Options..." has vanished too. (empty window)

Full virus scan sees nothing, so I can only guess that something was erased
when cleaning off the MalWare.

I'm open to any possible solutions.

If you do have a set of untampered IE6.0 (post SP2) registry settings I
would love a copy... I remember this worked for me on IE6.0 SP1 last time I
got hijacked.

Sending the entire program back to default seems like a simple way to sort
out an ever increasing amount of problems.

At least any changes I make from that point onwards are my own and not the
work of some backdoor scuttling advert scumbag.

TIA!

=)
