I am looking for an add-on or something else to filter messages on a
newsgroup by IP and not by e-mail address (a troll is infesting one of my
subscribed ng, and changes e-mail address every time).

Some suggestions?

Thanks in advance.
Kindly regards.

It depends on what newsreader you use, but most readers I have used
have the feature that you can set up filters, based on the content of
subject line, author, headers, msg body, etc..

If the IP-number is shown in the headers you simply set up a filter for
these messages.

Something like this:
Search in headers, for 0.0.0.0, action: do not retreive, or mark read,
or hide.

I use Outlook Express.
You can set up filters for some part of the messages, but I can't find a way
to filter someone by IP.
Thanks anyway.

Any other suggestions?

OE = Outlook Express

Think about changing your newsreader! There are others better than OE,
so as well as solving your particular problem you end up with a better
newsreading experience. Try xnews

Mmmh... I dont' think this could be best solution.
I am very happy with OE + FidoLook, and used them for years without a single
problem.
This is a particular situation that maybe doesn't go on for a long time... I
was just curious to know if some add-ons for OE could provide this feature.

Thanks anyway :)

Try Nfilter http://www.nfilter.org/faq.html

It can filter on any header including "nntp-posting-host"
providing the news server you use supports the "XHDR" command,
otherwise you are limited to headers in the overview.

Also supports regular expressions (case sensitive only, unfortunately)

If you use XP you will need to use an unzip program to extract the files
from np-120.exe as nfilter works, but the self extractor isn't compatible.

Regards

Mel.

I'm curious, why wouldn't the self extractor not be compatible with XP ?

Don't know why, but even in my Win2k the .exe doesn't extract files properly:
renaming as .zip it works perfectly.
Many thanks to mel for this useful tool.

How do you know what IP number he has?
Where can you read the IP number?
In the headers?

Yes, but what has that to do with this problem?
If you have looked at header information then you know that the IP
Address of some posters shows up in the header. An example of one is:

NNTP-Posting-Host: 80.65.205.96

I'll leave it to you to draw the connection on how he'll know the IP
Address of the poster he wishes to filter.

I use Outlook Express and Spampal which allows filtering by IP.

According to this post both the files are one byte short.

Might be worth trying to fix the length of the final newsproxy.exe
in a file editor.
