Windows 2000 Server, main Domain Controller, DNS server,
DHCP server on a native mode Windows 2000 domain (though
I've had this same problem even when the domain was mixed
mode.) Anytime the server is warm or cold booted, it
goes
through the first stage (black screen with white
progress "ladder") then gets to the second stage (Windows
2000 Server Family screen) and gets about 2/3 of the way
through the progress bar. It will hang at this point for
as long as 25 or 30 minutes, but usually "only" for about
10 or 15 minutes. Then it gets to the third stage, the
blue screen and "preparing network connections" etc,
which
it goes through just fine.

What is causing it to hang on that second stage for so
long? I've looked at article 285825, and made sure that
all of the settings it mentions are correct, but that
article really describes a completely different set of
symptoms from the above (it's talking about hanging in
the
third stage, which doesn't happen on my server.)

This has been like this since I first installed this
server a year or so ago, though there have been rare
occassions where the second stage goes right through
without hanging. It happens so rarely that I haven't
been
able to get an idea about what's different during these
times from what normally happens.

Additionally, I have two other DCs that usually don't
exhibit this problem. Usually, but one of the DCs
recently did hang at the same screen for about 5 minutes,
but just the one time.

This is starting to drive me nuts! Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

You might consider using only Display drivers that are included on the Windows 2000 CD-ROM.

Is there any particular reason why you say this (i.e. is
there a KB article that references this in relation to the
problem I'm having) or are you just saying something when
you don't have something to say?

In any event, the drivers on the server are the default
drivers.

So in other words, you don't have any reason for asking
the stupid question that you asked. Why not just say so
and be done with it?

As for my snide remark, if you didn't waste so much time
asking pointless questions (don't think we don't all see
it in the other threads) then I wouldn't have to be so
snide.

Deal with it.

Rob I really don't need your snide remark. Deal with it.

Rob I told you that because it helped someone a long time ago. I was not just flying off the cuff. But hey you are the expert so you'll figure out one day. Good luck.
