Is there any way to either widen the Start >> Documents menu so I can see
all of a long file name, or get a screen tip on mouse-over to show the whole
file name?

This is really good question. However, I don't know about this tweak but I
can tell you an another way to do the smilar task.

Do you know the Documents menu is folder on your disk which stores shortcut
of the recently opened file.

You can create a shortcut of that folder on your desktop. The advantage will
be that it stores more than 15 entires but Document menu shows only last 15
entries only.

To create a shortcut of this folder:

1. Goto My Computer
2. Open the Drive where Windows is installed
3. Here open the Documents & Settings Folder
4. Look the Folder with your Personal Settings Name like "Rajiv Kohli"
5. There is a folder name "My Recent Documents" which is hidden by default.
You must use "Show Hidden File" option from Tools menu to see it.
6. Right-click on this folder and choose Send To - Desktop - Create Shortcut

Now, one by one open more than 15 files. You will see that all of them will
be saved in that folder as a shortcut but in Document menu they will be only
latest 15.

If the information was useful to you then let us know.

Thank you, Rajiv. That might come in handy. What I might do instead,
though, is create a VB routine that will list such files from this folder as
meet certain criteria. That way, I can group them all by program (can't
sort by Type in the folder view because they are all shortcut .lnk files),
and only those within a certain date range.
