not sure if this one has got "lost" in the xmas break but i repost a
pre-xmas thread under the same name ...

Buz, thanks for the post reply.

as per KB306915 it seems that the machines are not being configured
correctly to process the maintenance settings correctly.

a further qu if i may - my assumption was that the reg value would have been
configured to 1 by the enabling of the "internet explorer maintenance policy
processing" in the policy that applies to the workstation.

the GPO MMC clearly indicates that the policy is enabled

not so - it seems that this policy changes the nogpolistchanges value under
the other key i note in this email (referencing the Group policy registry
table)

is there some sort of interaction between these two reg values ?

this then begs the qu - is there a policy value that does change the
"correct" reg value or does it need to be modded by registry manipulation
(manual or otherwise)

Thanks for your on this

GT

now a further question

Perhaps these will help.

268595 How to Force Custom Policies to Be Reapplied
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=268595

By default, Windows 2000 preferences are applied when the policy object
changes. If a user can modify the preferences by using the user interface,
the initial preference is not reapplied the next time that the user logs on.
If you create the NoGPOListChanges registry value and set it to 0, the
preferences that are set by the custom .adm file are applied each time that
a user logs on, or that a Windows 2000-based computer starts.

Buz, thanks for your continued help on this one.

i will get confirmation from the policy admins that the IE maintenance
settings are being set in policy mode and that KB306195 then applies

QU1 - i assume that the auto-proxy value is one that can that can be set by
policy ?

my own continued testing on this confirms conclusively that the enabling of
the policy;

computer configuration / admin templates / system / group policy / IE
maintenance processing

does not change the registry value under;

HKLM/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWSNT/CURRENTVERSION/GPEXTENSIONS/A2E3........AE
3B

but does change the value under;

HKML/SOFTWARE/POLICIES/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS/GROUPPOLICY/A2E3...AE3B

which i think was the original source of confusion as it led me to believe
the IE maintenance values were not being applied when in fact they were

QU - my confusion it seems is borne out of the two (APPARENTLY NOT LINKED
??) registry keys where the configuration of the client side extension for
IE maintenance processing is stored

I am struggling to see what bits of IE configuration are controlled using
one and not the other

Thanks

GT

The IE group sort of went out on their own when these policies were created.
It seems the IE policies are more IEAK geared then the normal Group policy
settings and rules I am used to. That is why they are so unlike other policy
settings.I am pretty sure that auto-proxy can be enabled via policy. I dont
know how the registry keys in question are used in this instance.

Buz, thanks for your post reply.

i share the view that the auto-proxy url is configurable by policy (as
opposed to preference)

am going to go down the road if increasing verbosity of the CSE for IE
maintennace processing - i assume that this dll supports the
extensiondebuglevel -

as previous mail would be looking for methods of confirming the application
by policy of IE maintenance settings;

userenv.log (with a debug level of 10002) does not seem to want to go down
to the detail of reg values even with the extensiondebugelevel set to 2

gpresult with the verbose output would have seemed the obvious choice but
....

it confirms that IE branding settings were received from the gpo in question
but then quote "additional information is not available for this type of
policy setting" !!!!

unlike other sections of the gpo which does detail values imported by the
CSE (eg registry settings)

any clues !!!!
