Replication between two servers

Hi

I have an old domain which earlier was Windows NT and now
it is Windows 2000 with AD. This works fine and the users
logs on well..

I have bought a new server wich I want to implement and
that I want to be the "main" server in time.. with Windows
2000. I have now installed Windows 2000 and made it a DC
in an totally new domain with a different domain name and
all. It works fine in my test LAN. I am wondering if there
is any way that I can replicate the AD database to this
new server from the old domain?

Or do I have to install the server all over again and make
it a child in the already existing domain tree?

Thank you in advance :)

Nope -- DCPromo the newer server to a regulary Server (unPromo),
add it to the "real" domain, and then DCPromo it as a new (additional)
DC in your production domain.

Now you have two DCs which is better than one. said:

No, you do not have to re-install but you have to cycle DCPromo.

And do NOT make it a "child in...domain tree" if you want it in your
original DOMAIN.

That's true :) Hehe..
But the thing is - I wish to change the name of the
domain.. the old domain name is an old name of this
company.. we have changed our name and it would have been
nice to change the domain name also :)
Guess it would be quite an operation maybe.. ?

If you upgrade ALL of your DCs (entire forest) to Win2003,
you can rename the domain in Win2003 Forest Functional Mode
(but cannot go back or later have Win2000 DCs.)

Herb,

Gonna jump in for a second. Hope thatyou do not mind.

John,

When you created the new Server was it part of the same
Forest as your production AD ( sounds like a different
Domain Tree but aprt ofthe same Forest )? Or did you
create a new Forest?

If you created a new Forest with the name that you want
for your new domain I *THINK* that you could use ADMT v2
to *simply* migrate the users from 'old' to 'new'...

Herb, please correct me if I am wrong.

John,

Herb is correct, though. And I have played with 2003
only a little bit so far but it does look really
awesome. If money is not an issue seriously consider
moving to 2003....

Cary and Herb,

The new server is currently demoted to only a standalone
server (as Herb thought I should do - but it was in a
totally new forest). I read through ADMT help files and it
seemed like it only could migrate from NT4 to Win2000..
but maybe I didn't read it well enough :) I'll read again
when I come back to work tomorrow.

Maybe the easiest way for me is to upgrade to 2003 in
time. Money *is* an issue so it wouldn't happen at
first.. :)

John,

ADMT will work in a WIN2000-to-WIN2000 situation. Think
about having a single domain / tree / forest situation
with 1000 users. later, for political reasons, it is
decided that both Accounting and Finance should have
their own domains ( please note: in WIN2000 this is
*usually* not necesary. An Organizational Unit is
*usually* a better solution. And, if the reasoning is
Security, then each "Department" would need its own
Forest ). So, you set up a Child Domain for Accounting
and a Child Domain for Finance ( giving you a
Accounting.yourdomain.com and Finance.yourdomain.com
situation ). You have 150 user account objects in
Accounting and 100 in Finance. ADMT would be a really
good choice. ADMT v2 would be an even better choice!
There are two versions out there: ADMT.exe and ADMT2.exe!

The above would be called an Intraforest Migration.

Now, let's take a look at the other possible situation
that I described ( a new forest for the Accounting and
Finance 'Departments' ). You would simply have to create
the new Forests for each and think about using NETDOM to
create the Trusts ( although ADDT MMC will work, too ).
In the DESTINATION forests you would want to run the ADMT
v2. You can migrate the 150 and 100 users to their new
forest.

This would be called an Interforest Migration.

Just make sure that all of the pieces are in place before
you do this. One thing: the 'Destination' Domain (
either the each of the Child Domains in the first example
or the domain in the new Forest in the second example )
need to be in WIN2000 Native Mode.

Cary
