I have just ordered a new PC which will have Vista. In fact it will arrive
today. Now I discover that Windows 7 will be out soon, maybe Jan. 09. Is
there any advantage to replacing Vista with the new Win 7? The hard drive is
failing on my present PC so I couldn't wait for the new Win 7.

Windows 7 final release will NOT be out during January 09. Replace your hard
drive now, and re-install Vista onto it..

Rosemary Windows 7 won't be available in Jan 2009 it hasn't entered beta yet
(pre-beta, yes but not official beta). Until the beta testers have trawled
Windows 7 for bugs and Microsoft have 'hopefully' fixed the bugs you won't
see Windows 7 until around 2010.

Stick with you new Vista machine.

.... and then pay still more money for Windows 7. It's all a racket.

Maybe Jan 2010 but not in Jan 2009. Re-install your Vista since Windows 7 is still a long way off

Current estimates for the commercial release of Windows 7 is Quarter 4
2009 so just be for the holiday buying season.

The public beta should be released January 2009 but would not advise
anyone to run that on their main machine

This is why I'm making my old machine (2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo) last another
year. I'll wait until PCs are sold with Windows 7 pre-installed before
replacing it.

No way. Estimates are for late 2009 or 2010. And if the estimate isn't met
and it is released later than that, it won't be the first time for
Microsoft.

If I were in your shoes, I would simply get it with Vista.

And you'd be nuts to install any MS OS before SP1 anyway.

That's your view, but not mine at all. Since we are here in a Vista
newsgroup, I'll point out that I've been running Vista for almost exactly
two years, since RTM in November 2006, and have had zero problems with it.

And I've had similar experiences with Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows
98 before Vista.

You should play the lottery then.
