Replacing video with slide show

Can someone please help me find the "least expensive" software that will allow me to replace video while continuing to hear the audio associated with that video. In other words, I have a video clip of my father discussing his early life. While he is talking, I want to fade into still pics of his early life. This is not like a narration where I would add voice to a series of still pics, but rather the opposite. Replacing the video while leaving the audio

I was told that WMM might do this, but I have not been able to figure it out if it does. If it will, I would appreciate any assistance you might be able to provide. If it won't, does anyone know a software package that will. I have been told that Adobe Premiere will do this, but have not checked it out due to the cost

Thank you for an assistance.

You should be able to do this with MovieMaker 2. First of all make sure
you're in the timeline view. Then instead of dragging your video down to the
Video track, drag it down to the Audio/Music track. That way, you'll get the
audio from the video but not the video itself. You can then drag your still
images to the video track.

If you want to start with some of your video and then fade to the stills as
you indicate, then drag your video down to the video track as well. While it
is selected, click on Clip...Audio...Mute from the menu to mute the audio on
that clip (as you already have it on the Audio/Music track). You can then
trim off as much as the video you want and then start adding your stills
with fade transitions between them as you see fit.

Sounds like a cool project.
Hope this helps.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help. It all sounds so simple when explained in the clear and concise method like you described. LOL - I think even I can do this.
