I am looking at buying a card for my computer that will act as a TIVO. The
cards that I am looking at state "125 channel cable ready TV tuner " what
does this mean?

1. Does this mean that it will only recognize 125 different channels? What
if you have satellite or digital cable with more channels?

2. What does the manual tuning mean?

3. Anyone have any recommendations? I'd like to get an external USB one so I
can use it with my notebook.

Thanks.

a) It will recognize up to 125 analog channels....and only those that do
not require a subscription to a cable company that need a
decoder/receiver/descrambler. eg.. it will recognize MSNBC but not HBO!

b) You can tune it to record on channel 3 or channel 45.

Any stations that need a descrambler,decoder/receiver (or any satellite
transmissions which are all digital) will still need a cable box or
satellite box. That box will output on channel 2 or 3 (whichever you set it
to) and in that situation you will tune your tuner to record on channel 2 or
3 and use the timer facility on the receiver box.

So it will recognize 125 analog channels.

1. What if I am receiving a digital signal through cable or satellite?

Can't help you, but try using the Google search engine with the subject "TV
tuner cards for computers".

Then you will need to descramble/decode the digital signal through the cable
box or satellite receiver box, both of which will then output an analog
signal.
