Replacing Slides in a powerpoint show

I created a pps and when I finished I realized that it was too big. I deleted
a few slides and replaced them with resized pictures which were thus smaller
in size than the previous ones. When I checked again the size after this
change I realized that the show was even bigger. It was as though the old
slides were left in place and the ones replacing them (supposedly) were ADDED
to the show instead of REPLACING the old ones. (no duplications showed when I
played the show). What is the problem here?

I decided to dump the entire show and start anew with the smaller pictures.
When I was done the show was half the size of the previous one (as it should
be). I have Powerpoint 2003 (XP SP2)

Go to Tools--> Options, Save tab. Uncheck the box that enables fast saves.
Ok your way out then save the presentation under a new name. It should
shrink somewhat.

After that, check out this entry from the PPT FAQ:

Thank you Kathy and Lucy. Very interesting. So because of having "fast saves"
on the slides I was deleting were actually not deleted? I changed the setting
and saved the pps with a different name and it was indeed a little smaller. I
also looked at the tutorial but the TV was on (my wife was watching) and I
couldn'r concentrate. I'll look at it again tomorrow morning.

Fast Save is a litle more complex than this very simplified explaination but
in essence with it enabled PowerPoint just saves a list of CHANGES. If the
change is removing something then saving the info that xyz has been removed
makes the file bigger! It also makes it much more likely that something will
get out of step and corrupt the file.

Lucy,
I tried to duplicate the procedure from the little tutorial you recommended
and it worked very well with the exception of the text. The pps is about the
birds in a park nearby and I identified each one. The text didn't come out
very clear when I used the "Paste Special" Is there anything I am doing
wrong? or that's the way it is with the text. Thanks

Hi Henry

I wouldn't use the paste special method with text - only with pictures. If
the pictures contain text then you can try paste specialing as a png but
sometimes that makes the size bigger! What I would do is try the right click
-> format picture -> compress (though ideally I keep my text & pictures
seperate). Just experiment (on a copy of your file) and see what gets the
best quality/size balance. It also depends on whether you are going to be
projecting the ppt or looking at it on a computer screen as projectors tend
not to be as sharp as computer screens so you can get away with lower quality
stuff....

I am using it for a computer screen but sometimes I e-mail them to friends.
It helps for the pps to be smaller for that purpose. I have to find another
way for the writing to legible. Thank you.

PS I inserted text after I inserted the picture in the pps. It's working much
better. I'll have to delete the text from all the pictures (about 30 of them;
not big deal).
Thanks
